The High School Team Challenge™ was started at the Columbus Race for the Cure by Lindsay Avner, who was 12 years old when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Participating in her second Race for the Cure® after her mother’s diagnosis, she was surprised by the lack of high school student participation. She knew how breast cancer had altered her life and so many others; so she set out to get more high school students involved in the race.
In an effort to empower high school students to get involved in the fight against breast cancer, the goals for the High School Team Challenge (HSTC) are:
• Increase breast cancer awareness among high school students
• Raise funds to help support the Komen Boise Affiliate’s mission
• Increase participation of area high school students in the Komen Boise Race for Race for the Cure®
• Have fun while positively affecting the community
Young people have incredible potential, motivation, and power to make a big difference in their communities. Additionally, many high school students know of someone who has been touched by breast cancer and can benefit by learning about breast heath.
The HSTC is a competition among area high schools led by a Team Leader and school advisor. Each high school forms a team to run or walk in the Boise Race for the Cure® on May 12, 2012. The high schools compete with each other in the following categories:
Although the HSTC is a competition, it is important to realize that the true winners are those who reach the most young people in a meaningful way.
The school that wins will get their name on the coveted pink trophy which will also call the winning school home for a year until the next race. For schools that raise $5000 or more, they will get a free 10x10 tent provided for them at the Team Tailgate area on Race Day.
