Brief Summary of Boise Affiliate Priorities

Bi-annually the Boise Affiliate completes a comprehensive Community Needs Profile of our service area to ensure grant funds are distributed to community-based programs providing the greatest impact.  This profile is now used to guide the local grant application and review process consistent with the Affiliate's mission and standards.  The needs assessment of the Boise Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has identified the following needs for priority funding for the 2011-2012 grant cycles.

Statement of Need

The Boise Affiliate establishes its funding priorities by conducting a biannual community needs assessment.  The needs assessment of the Boise Affiliate has identified the following areas for the 2011-2012 grant cycle:
• Increased screening for under-insured, uninsured, and low income women
• Increased screening access for rural women
• Increased support for persons in breast cancer treatment or survivorship
• Improved communication between patients and health care providers
• Fill gaps across the continuum of care in your community.

Priority Funding Directed towards:

Early Detection and Education – (screening & education/outreach) Approximately 70% of our funding will support programs that target early detection.  It is proven that breast cancer is much more curable when it is detected early than those detected late.

  • Delivery of free and reduced screening and diagnostic mammography services to underinsured, uninsured, and low income populations.
  • Referral programs must show appropriate steps to ensure a seamless continuum of care.
  • Education focused on the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection must facilitate access to breast cancer screening.  Funding will not be provided for breast health/cancer education WITHOUT also providing referral to and confirmation of screening and/or diagnostic breast care.

Patient Access Programs and Mobile Mammography – (rural screening) Approximately 20% of our funding will be dedicated to programs that reduce gaps and barriers to accessing breast health care.

Patient Navigation and Patient Assistance – (treatment and patient support) Approximately 10% of our grant funding will go to support programs in culturally appropriate patient navigation programs that reduces disparities in breast cancer outcomes among medically underserved patients.

  • Programs must include patient navigation that aid breast cancer patients to access and understanding of the medical system, as well as allocate financial resources for low-income patients for services such as: rent/mortgage, transportation, utilities, food, medical supplies such as lymphedema sleeves, mastectomy camisoles, surgeon costs*, and/or childcare.

*Surgeon cost: maximum allowance per surgeon $500.00 or maximum grant request 15% of grant.
